I Was the Woman I Wanted to Help

October 23, 2026•6 min read

For 20+ years, I worked in corporate technology. I had the career, the calendar, and a closet full of clothes that were supposed to go with it. Yet almost every morning, I stood in that closet feeling like I had nothing to wear. I could handle a demanding career, but figuring out what to put on my own body felt harder than it should have.

Here is the part you might not expect from someone who now helps women transform their closets: when it came to my wardrobe, organizing was the only part that came naturally.

I understood space, storage, and how to make a closet function beautifully. I could look at a crowded closet and see what needed to move, what belonged together, and how to make it easier to use. But knowing where to put my clothes did not mean I knew which clothes belonged in my life or how to wear them.

Style, color, makeup, shopping with intention instead of panic? Those were things I needed help with.

I bought clothes the way a lot of women do — something on sale, something that looked good on somebody else, something I hoped would make me feel better that day. Too much of it stayed on the hanger with the tags attached. Every unworn purchase became another reminder of money spent without getting any closer to feeling good in my clothes. I kept buying, but I still did not understand what was missing.

It is a frustrating place to be, especially when you feel like you should have figured this out by now. Getting dressed is something we do every day. How could it still feel so confusing?

I Needed Someone to Teach Me

Learning from Batul, a personal stylist and now my business partner and co-founder of You Have Arrived!, helped me begin to understand what I had been missing. We worked with real clothes and real decisions. I learned how to look at an outfit and recognize what it needed, how to make pieces work together, and how to shop with a purpose instead of hoping the next purchase would solve everything.

I did not learn it all at once. I learned one thing, tried it, and gradually became more comfortable making my own choices. Having someone explain the why made a difference. I was beginning to understand how to do this for myself.

Color was another area where I needed guidance. I honestly did not know which colors looked good on me. I could like a color on a hanger or admire it on someone else, but that did not tell me what it would do for me.

So I hired an expert who assessed both my color and my style type. I learned that my color type was Leaf Blue Autumn and my style type was Dramatic Natural. Those names were new to me, but the most valuable part was the explanation. She walked me through how she determined each one and helped me understand what she was seeing.

That mattered because I wanted more than a label or a list of things to buy. I wanted to understand myself better and make choices with a little more confidence. For once, I had something to work from beyond "I think I like this" or "It looked good on her."

And Then There Was Makeup

If I felt uncertain about clothes and color, makeup was even more unfamiliar. I barely owned any, did not know what to buy, and certainly did not feel confident applying it. My favorite eyeshadow palette was the one I had purchased for my wedding in 2003. That probably tells you everything you need to know about how much attention I had given my makeup bag.

When you do not know where to begin, even choosing a few products can feel overwhelming. What do I actually need? Which shade is right? What am I supposed to do with it once I get it home? Buying makeup would not answer those questions for me.

So I found a makeup specialist who taught me. She helped me understand how to wear the autumn colors that suited me and how to apply them. I needed someone who could meet me at the beginning, without assuming I already knew the basics.

There is something vulnerable about admitting you need help with things other women seem to do so easily. But I needed instruction, a chance to practice, and room to ask questions. The same was true of style and color. These were things I could learn.

Why This Is Personal to Me

I know how emotional these parts of our lives can feel. An unworn piece of clothing can carry guilt about what it cost. A closet full of options can leave you frustrated with yourself. Asking for help with your appearance can feel uncomfortable when you think you should already know what works.

There is nothing shallow about wanting to feel comfortable in your clothes or recognize yourself in the mirror. These are everyday experiences, and struggling with them can take up more energy than we like to admit.

My closet was proof that organization alone did not answer every question. I needed help understanding my style, my colors, my makeup, and my shopping decisions, too. As I learned, getting dressed became less frustrating. I began to trust my choices instead of questioning them.

When I retired from corporate in 2019, I knew I wanted whatever came next to be something I enjoyed doing every day. Helping women create beautiful, functional closets gave me that. My own experience also helped me see how much more support a woman might need beyond an organized space.

That is why it mattered to me that You Have Arrived! bring together closet organization, personal style, color, makeup and beauty, intentional shopping, and closet design. I wanted us to create a place for women like me—women who are capable in so many areas of their lives and still need someone to help them figure this part out.

Batul and I built the platform so you can begin with whatever is making everyday life harder right now. Maybe you need to make sense of what is in your closet. Maybe you want to understand your colors, simplify your makeup routine, or stop bringing home clothes you never wear. You can start with one question and give yourself time to learn.

The free guides, the Closet Confidence Quiz™, and the community in The Closet Transformation Club™ - our Facebook group - are there to offer that starting point and support along the way.

I still bring my love of organization and closet design to this work. I also bring the experience of being the woman standing in a beautifully organized closet, wondering why getting dressed was so hard. I remember her, and she is a big part of why this matters to me.

You do not need more clothes. You need clarity and a little support while you find it. I know, because I needed both.
